Recent updates by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that although there are fewer younger motorcycle drivers on the road today, there has been an increase in drivers over the age of 40 and that there are an average of almost 4,000 motorcycle fatalities a year. In fact these statistics also state that a motorcyclist is much more likely to die in an accident than people in other types of accidents, even when wearing protective gear.
Many people enjoy the thrill of motorcycle riding however in recent years there has been an increase in the number of motorcycle accidents. The reason for these accidents lies in the fact that other motorists cannot see these motorcyclists when in heavy traffic or at night, and studies indicate than almost 70% of motorcycle accidents are caused by the fault of other drivers. Other reasons for these accidents are due to poor road conditions, inadequate motorcyclist skills, speeding and driving while under the influence.
Motorcycle accident attorneys find that motorist speeding, driver inattention, and aggressive driving tend to be the top causes of these motorcycle collisions. In fewer cases the accidents are caused by motorcyclist negligence.
New updated statistics given by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration show that there are fewer motorcyclist under the age of 18 on the road, however there is an increase in motorcyclists in the 40 and up age group, and that this age group is generally driving larger engines in the 1,000 to 1,500 cc’s.
Motorcycle ownership of riders between the age of 40 to 50 has increased in the last 15 years from 16% to nearly 30%, and has also increased by 25% in age groups over the age of 50. In fact, the number of registered motorcyclists on the road has risen by almost 2 million which is an increase of 48%.
Therefore it is logical that more motorcyclists would be involved in accidents than ever before, however this does not mean that in all cases these accidents are caused by the motorcyclist. In fact, there are many motorcycle owners that are very safe drivers, unfortunately this cannot be said for all vehicle drivers.
